Problem Statement

Mark K, the director of online programs at an international university, has approached us for assistance with the creation of an instructional workshop to help students to manage their time in a better way to improve their overall performance.

Recent survey results provided by him show that while the majority of learners at his institution develop a study plan which includes all important deadlines, most fail to properly account for study time and often submit their assignments very last minute.

Instructional Goal

By the end of the workshop, learners will be able to apply time management techniques to their online learning environment and achieve a better work/study/life balance.

1. Given a variety of time management methods, its history and its cultural awareness, learners will summarize each technique and its benefits with 80% accuracy.

2. Given an outline for efficient time management workflow and list of available tools, learners will identify a preferred time management method to apply to his/her own schedule on a regular basis.

3. Based on personal schedule, course deadlines, and selected time management techniques, learners will be able to prepare a weekly study schedule that includes all tasks and responsibilities, including regular study times for all courses..

Proposed Solution

After clearly understanding the needs, the problem and the performance gap, it was determined that some of the best moderating factors for adult learners included educational modules that create awareness of the specific challenges and barriers they face, as well as introduction to available tools and techniques related to effective time management .

Therefore, a creation of an hour-long on-demand online training focused on understanding the importance of time management and introduction to methods to better schedule ones time on daily basis while considering their personal, professional and educational commitments  would be best suitable to help adult learners to cope with the difficulties they experience.

Target Audience

Adult online learners (older than 25 years old) face several specific issues and challenges that may not directly impact younger learners, such as Generation Z who may have transitioned directly from high school into college or university. Adult learners are a diverse group with a wide range of educational backgrounds and experiences, as well as personal and professional responsibilities. And while most are highly motivated to engage in their studies, unforeseen circumstances and scheduling conflicts can interfere with their online education.

In order to outline to workshop content, an in-depth task analysis has been created with three main learning objectives:

1. Concepts to Manage Time & Eliminate Distractions
2. Time Management Workflow and Applicable Tools
3. Creation of Focused Time Management Workflow

Course Development

By applying the traditional ADDIE model to create this online training, we first analyzed the needs of our target audience, decided on the relevant content and assessment tools, interviewed subject-matter experts and designed an outline for the workshop.

Once all the content was ready for development, we created a slideshow, instructor guide, participant booklet and student workbook to accompany the training.

After the development stage, the online workshop was reviewed by fellow instructional designers for feedback, and loaded into the learning management system to be again evaluated after the first round of delivery of the training to adult online learners.

Takeaways

After completion of the instructional design planning, research, design and development stages, and feedback from other instructional designers and industry experts, we are confident that the course address all the needs of adult online learners and will help them to become more efficient with their daily scheduling and planning. Further evaluation is pending after the training.
